Why do I need an IDP?

IDP helps secure your travel abroad

International Drivers Permit (IDP) helps you drive overseas using your own valid driver's license. It is often required by car rental companies and is frequently requested by traffic authorities if you show your foreign driver's license.

Do I need an IDP? The best way to confirm if you need an IDP is to contact your destination country's traffic authorities or use our destination checker

An IDP translates your driver's license into a language your destination country understands. It has been designed to be simple to use and easy to understand for both English and Non-English speakers. However, it is not an official identification document and cannot be used as a replacement for a driver's license.

International Drivers Association uses the standard format of the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic, which is accepted in over 150 countries. The IDP is not needed in some cases as your destination country may recognize your driver's license as valid on its own. The best way to confirm if you need an IDP is to contact your destination country's traffic authorities.

Some countries in the world do not accept Digital IDP Booklet, most notably United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia. Be sure to check if your destination country accepts a Digital IDP version before placing your order. The best option will be carrying your actual Printed IDP Booklet with your original driver’s license.

Complementary ID Card

The IDP Booklet comes with a Complementary ID Card that further enhances the usability of your International Driving Permit. The information from your driver's license, including your name, residence, and the types of vehicles you are allowed to drive, is also on the plastic ID card, making it easier for foreign authorities to understand your driving credentials.

A QR code at the bottom of the card allows you to access your digital IDP booklet using your smartphone.

It's important to remember that the IDP and its complementary card are primarily a translation tool and should always be accompanied by your valid national driving license. The IDP is recognized in many countries around the world, but it's not a substitute for a valid national driver's license.
