History

Portuguese people were the ones who first arrived in Liberia in 1461. The Portuguese named the land the Grain Coast, and later in 1663, the British made trading posts on the coast of the land, but it was destroyed by the Dutch. In 1822, Liberia was discovered due to the efforts of the American Colonization Society (a private organization based in the United States) to find a place for the freed American slaves in West Africa to settle to.

The country was originally called Monrovia. However, in 1847, it became the Free and Independent Republic of Liberia. Their constitution was similar to the constitution of the United States. Liberia experienced civil war twice, one from 1989-1993 and another from 1999-2003. Around 250,000 people were killed in both of those civil wars. Liberia has the presidential representative democratic republic type of government. The Legislative branch consists of the Senate (30 members) and the house of representatives (73 members).
