A long-awaited change
Although this name change may seem recent, it was approved by the Czech government in April 2016 and subsequently included in the United Nations terminology database on July 1, 2016. Adopting Czechia as the official shorter name was made to facilitate easier branding and promotion across various sectors, including sports and media.
While the country retains its full name, the Czech Republic, the government is actively encouraging the use of Czechia to streamline communication and enhance international recognition. This marks the second significant name change for the country, which was previously known as Czechoslovakia before its split into two independent nations in 1993.
