Thailand is set to roll out a new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system for visa-exempt visitors. The initiative, aimed at strengthening border security, will be launched between December 2024 and June 2025. It will be mandatory for those arriving by air, land, or sea.

Though the ETA isn't classified as a visa, it functions as a security measure. It mirrors systems like the ETIAS in Europe, helping to prevent illegal migration, monitor health risks, and enhance safety.

Once approved, visitors will receive an email confirmation within 24 hours. However, the Thai government has not yet released detailed information regarding the required documents. It's expected that travelers will need to provide proof of accommodation and outbound travel, like requirements in neighboring countries like Malaysia and Cambodia.

At present, citizens from 93 countries can enter Thailand visa-free for up to 60 days. They can extend their stay to 90 days at a local immigration office. Many tourists have also been using border runs to reset their visa-free period. With the introduction of the ETA, it’s still unclear whether this practice will face new restrictions.

The ETA will be issued via Thailand’s official e-portal, www.thaievisa.go.th, and is expected to be free. Once obtained, visitors can pass through electronic immigration gates using a QR code. The system will also conduct checks for criminal records and passport authenticity, streamlining the immigration process.

This new system is part of Thailand’s broader efforts to modernize and secure its borders, reflecting a global trend in electronic travel authorizations.

When traveling to Thailand, explore the country’s temples and beaches by driving your own car. Familiarizing yourself with the rules related to driving in Thailand can ensure a hassle-free adventure. While in the Land of Smiles, you can also embark on an exciting four-day road trip.
