Driving Rules in Azerbaijan

Important Reminders:
- Drive on the right side of the road.
- Seat belt is a must.

- Avoid drinking if you are driving. Azerbaijan has 0 tolerance for blood alcohol level.
- The speed limit is 20 km/h in urban areas, 60 km in rural roads and 110 km/h on most expressways.
- U-turn is not allowed on pedestrian lanes, railway crossing, bridges and tunnels.
- Driving in evening is not advisable. Local animals often cause accidents.
Driving in the Winter
Winter in Azerbaijan is tolerable. You are good to go as long as you have all weather tires in your wheels. Emergency kits in your car will also help in cases of unexpected incidents.

What is the cost of international driving license in Azerbaijan?
The cost of an International Driver’s License/ International Driving Permit (IDP) in Azerbaijan starts at $69. You will need an IDP to drive a motor vehicle from a car rental company in another foreign country along with your valid driver’s license. That way, when the traffic police stop you during checkpoints and check your valid driver’s license, your International Driver’s Permit will translate your valid home country driver’s license into 12 of the widely used languages worldwide according to the United Nations Convention on Road Traffic.
However, an IDP does not exempt you from comment traffic violations such as not wearing seat belts, not drinking alcohol, overspeeding in urban areas, etc. that will land you in the police department.

How old do you have to be to drive in Azerbaijan?
The minimum age to possess a full driving licence in Azerbaijan is 18 years old and older. And it doesn’t matter whether you’ve received your driver’s license since you were less than 18, you’ll only be allowed to drive if you are around that age.
However, please note that a different rule is also set by car rental companies before you can use a motor vehicle.
