[Latest Travel News] Your flight is set, your itinerary is ironed out, and all you need to do is head to the airport to hop on the plane and jet off to your destination. If you’re bound for Europe anytime soon, it seems there’s another hiccup you need to navigate aside from check-in and immigration: travel strikes.

The recent waves of travel strikes across Europe have been causing delays and cancellation that could affect your getaway. Don’t stress! Understanding the reasons behind these strikes and knowing what you can do can help ensure your trip still goes smoothly.

Why are travel strikes happening in Europe?

There are several reasons behind strikes in Europe, but they happen regularly as employees push for higher pay, improved working conditions, and better compensation. While travel strikes are announced in advance, the amount of notice varies.

Some airlines send out emails and updates to notify customers about the strikes, and travel advisories can also be published to inform the public about possible delays and cancellations. It’s always a good idea to stay informed and check all relevant channels for updates as your travel date approaches.

What flight disruptions can you expect in July 2024?

As reported by Euronews, there will be strikes happening in Italy, Scotland, Türkiye, France, and the Netherlands. For your reference, keep in mind the dates and details below:

  • Italy: July 21, between 1 to 5 p.m.

Expect disruptions at the Milan Linate and Bergamo Orio al Serio airports. The transport sector is not allowed to go on strike between July 27 and September 5.

  • Scotland (no dates announced)

Security processing at the Scottish airports maybe affected due to unresolved disputes over pay. Union members at Glasgow and Aberdeen airports support strike action.

  • Türkiye: until July 14

Air traffic controllers at Antalya airport have walked out due to pay concerns and issues with working conditions, which have caused flight delays and is impacting arrivals and departures.

  • France

Due to decreasing staff numbers, workers on France’s Autoroutes du Sud (ASF) and Vinci motorways have begun strikes and walkouts. No announcements have been made if further strikes will take place.

Those flying to Paris for this year’s Olympic Games are advised to check advisories and other channels to stay updated on strikes before and during the event.

  • Netherlands: September 12

A public transport strike is scheduled in September that will take place in the biggest of the Netherlands. Services in Amsterdam, The Hague, and Rotterdam are expected to be affected.

  • United Kingdom

If disputes over pay are not resolved, travelers are advised to expect delays and strikes at London Gatwick Airport.

Are passengers entitled to compensation due to travel strikes?

Delayed and cancelled flights can affect the whole trip, especially if your hotels are booked, and your itinerary is in place. Getting compensation depends on different factors, but it’s always best to review the terms and conditions of your ticket purchase to see if there are compensation policies included.

Don’t hesitate to contact your airline for further concerns, and keep copies of your tickets and receipts, as these may come in handy in the future.
