Malaga, a top Spanish summer destination, is cracking down on misbehaving tourists. In 2023, the city saw 14 million visitors, which has led to complaints from locals. Residents say their hometown has turned into a "theme park" due to overcrowding, gentrification, and disrespectful behavior, which led to people feeling that their city is collapsing.

In response, the Malaga council updated its tourism rules. A new poster campaign in both English and Spanish reminds visitors how to behave properly. This initiative aims to improve the city’s quality of life for both residents and tourists.

One major rule focuses on public dress codes. Walking around the city without an “upper garment” is now illegal. Tourists must wear tops in public spaces, and fines for violations can reach up to €750. This law was introduced after residents complained about shirtless tourists in the city center.

Other cities, like Barcelona, have also introduced fines for inappropriate clothing. There, tourists caught walking in bikinis or topless can be fined up to £500.

Another rule urges tourists to be mindful of noise levels. Visitors are asked to avoid shouting, singing, or playing loud music, especially in residential areas. The city council highlights the need to respect local residents, including the elderly and essential workers.

The campaign also stresses that pavements are meant for pedestrians. Tourists using bicycles or scooters are required to use designated lanes and not block walking paths. This is part of an effort to ensure the safety and convenience of both locals and visitors.

Keeping the city clean is also a priority as tourists are encouraged to use garbage cans, especially near monuments, parks, and gardens. Littering in these areas could lead to fines.

While these new rules may seem strict, they are designed to make Malaga a more pleasant place for everyone.
