Visa-Free Entry Spurs Indian Tourism Boom in Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan

Indian travelers are setting their sights on new destinations, with Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Bhutan topping the list of emerging travel hotspots.

A recent MakeMyTrip report, covering trends from June 2023 to May 2024, shows a 491% increase in interest in Kazakhstan and a 404% increase in Azerbaijan. This surge is largely driven by easier visa policies and direct flights.

Kazakhstan has experienced an influx of Indian tourists since 2022, thanks to a 14-day visa-free policy. Dastan Ryspekov, head of the Kazakh Tourism Committee, highlighted the ‘rocket-like’ increase, with 28,300 Indians visiting in 2023 alone. Direct flights from Delhi to Almaty, taking only three hours, also make it convenient. Social media influencers are further fueling interest, showcasing Kazakhstan’s unique landscapes to a wide audience.

Similarly, Azerbaijan is winning over Indian travelers with its easy e-visa process and affordable European charm. With 140,000 Indian visitors from January to July this year, tourism officials report a 2.7-fold increase compared to 2022. Flights from Delhi to Baku are just four hours, making Azerbaijan an attractive and accessible option. Many Indians find the experience of traveling to Baku comparable to a European escape but without the hassle of a Schengen visa.

Other countries in the top 10 list include Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and Nepal, which offer visa-free access or simplified visa processes. Social media continues to play a significant role in making these destinations popular, with travel influencers spotlighting the affordability and ease of access.
