MGM to Launch a Mini Sphere Experience at New Dubai Resort
New MGM Resort in Dubai to Feature Mini Sphere and Hotels
MGM Resorts announced new plans for its latest project in Dubai: a 1,500-room resort called The Island. Located on Bluewaters Island, the resort will include three hotel towers—MGM, Bellagio, and Aria. The centerpiece will be a spherical events venue, which MGM CEO Bill Hornbuckle says, while smaller than the Las Vegas Sphere, will be equally impressive.
The Dubai Sphere will seat 300 people and host a mini showroom. Hornbuckle explained it would offer immersive experiences, such as a walkthrough of Dubai’s history, from a desert in 1985 to a bustling megacity today. He emphasized the Sphere's independence from any other MGM venues.
The Island has faced delays since its approval in 2017, and while construction is back on track, there’s still no confirmed opening date. Hornbuckle also clarified there will be no casino—yet. Despite MGM’s initial hopes, gaming in the UAE remains controversial under Islamic law. However, with competition from neighboring countries, attitudes are shifting with the UAE forming a gaming regulatory body in 2023, hinting at future possibilities.
Wynn Resorts is also entering the Dubai market, with a $4 billion project set to open in 2027. Meanwhile, Caesars Palace Dubai, which opened in 2018, has since exited the region. The competition for Dubai’s tourism is heating up, and MGM is positioning itself for potential growth.
