Key Driving Regulations in Turkey
While many driving rules are similar worldwide, knowing Turkey's specific regulations can greatly ease your travel experience. Familiarizing yourself with Turkey's driving regulations will also help you avoid incurring fines and penalties.
Speed Limits
In Turkey, speed limits are strictly enforced: 50kph in urban areas, 90kph on open roads (similar to UK dual carriageways), and 120kph on motorways. Speeding fines vary based on the extent of the violation. There's a 10% leeway for speed limit breaches. Exceeding this by up to 30% incurs a fine of ₺115 (€34), while surpassing it further results in a ₺238 (€69.92) penalty.
Seat Belt Requirements
In Turkey, seat belts must be worn at all times, and all seats in a vehicle must be equipped with seat belts. If a medical condition prevents you from wearing a seat belt, a medical exemption certificate translated into Turkish is required. Additionally, it's mandatory to have a fire extinguisher, two warning triangles, and a first-aid kit in your vehicle.
Child Passenger Safety
Strict rules apply to child passengers in Turkey. Children aged 3 to 11 years who are under 1.35 meters tall must use suitable child restraints. A rear-facing safety seat in the back of the car is mandated for children aged 12 months or under or weighing up to 9 kg.
Right of Way
In Turkey, the right of way on roads is similar to most European countries: drivers on the right-hand side have priority. Pedestrians at crossings always have precedence, especially when traffic lights are absent. At roundabouts, those entering have the right of way. Additionally, pedestrians and cyclists crossing cycle tracks or pavements are given priority.
