Italy is considering a significant increase in tourist taxes. The proposed hike, aimed at tackling over tourism and supporting cash-strapped cities, could see hotel levies rise to as much as €25 per night for top-tier accommodations.

Tourism Minister Daniela Santanchè, part of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party, is set to discuss the potential changes with industry leaders this month. Santanchè defends the proposal, stating it will improve services and promote responsible tourism.

"In times of overtourism, we are debating this so that it really helps improve services and make tourists who pay it more responsible," she said.

However, the travel industry strongly opposes the plan. Hotel associations warn that higher taxes could harm Italy’s competitiveness in Europe. Barbara Casillo, director of Confindustria Alberghi, cautions that the increased taxes might drive tourists away, especially with stiff competition from other destinations.

Despite objections, many Italian cities struggle with the influx of visitors. The proposed tax increase could generate the revenue needed for maintaining tourist sites and public services. Critics, however, argue that these funds should not be used for ordinary municipal expenses.

As Italy's tourism industry recovers to pre-pandemic levels, the debate over the proposed tax changes is expected to continue.
