What is an International Driving Permit (IDP), and Why Do You Need One in Bangladesh?

Think of it as your license’s passport.
Bangladesh follows the 1949 Geneva Convention, which means it only accepts IDPs that match this version. If your country issues the 1968 format (like many in Europe), it might not be valid here—even if it works in neighboring countries. That mix-up alone has stranded more than a few travelers at rental counters.
The IDP isn’t some new tech or app. It’s a paper booklet—a bit old-school, but still the international standard. Inside? Your license details, photo, and driving categories—all translated so Bangladeshi police or rental agents don’t have to guess what kind of vehicle you’re allowed to drive.
And let’s be clear: the IDP doesn’t replace your license. It only works when both are shown together. No license, no drive.
Can I Drive in Bangladesh With a US, Indian, or European License?
No. Not by itself. You’ll still need a valid 1949 IDP, no matter where your license is from—even if it’s in English.
Here’s how it plays out:
From the US? You’ll need a 1949 IDP from AAA or AATA. Your state license alone isn’t accepted.
From India? Despite how close India is to Bangladesh, you’ll still need an IDP from your RTO. No shortcuts.

From Australia, Canada, or Vietnam? Same story—your national license must be paired with the 1949-format IDP.

What Happens if You Drive Without an IDP in Bangladesh?
You could get fined up to ৳5,000 (roughly $45 USD), have your car impounded, or lose insurance coverage entirely.
Bangladesh doesn’t mess around with road rules. Police checkpoints are common—especially for foreign drivers. If you can’t show both your home license and the correct IDP, you’re in for a rough time.
Some travelers think they’ll get lucky and slip by. But the real cost shows up when something goes wrong—like a fender bender or a paperwork check.
Insurance companies? They’re quick to deny claims if you're driving without the right documents. And once that happens, you’re on the hook for damages, injuries, and repairs—potentially thousands out of pocket.
Do Car Rentals in Bangladesh Require an International Driving Permit?
Yes—most car rental companies in Bangladesh will ask for both your national license and a 1949-format IDP. No IDP, no keys.
There’s no way around it. Even if you’ve booked in advance, paid online, and shown up with a smile—if you can’t hand over the right documents, they won’t let you drive.
Rental agencies follow strict rules, especially when dealing with foreign customers. Their insurance depends on you having an IDP. If you don’t, they won’t take the risk.
And no, a digital copy on your phone won’t cut it.
How to Get an International Driving License for Bangladesh
You must apply for an IDP in your home country—before you arrive in Bangladesh. The country does not issue them to visitors.
Here’s the no-fuss checklist:
Your valid national license
A passport-sized photo
A completed application
IDP fee (usually $20–$30 USD)
In the U.S., apply through AAA or AATA. In India, go to your local RTO. In Canada, contact CAA. In Australia, reach out to your state’s automobile association.
The most important part? Ask for the 1949 version, not the 1968. That’s the one Bangladesh accepts.
How Long Is the IDP Valid, and How Do I Use It?
The 1949 IDP is valid for up to 1 year—but not longer than your home license. Always carry both when driving.
So, if your license expires in 6 months, your IDP is only good for 6 months—even if it says “1 year” on the booklet.
Also, don’t treat the IDP as your main license. It’s not valid alone. It’s a supplement, like a travel companion your license can’t go without.
And once it expires, you can’t renew it abroad. You’ll need to apply for a new one from your home country.
Is It Called an IDP or IDL?
It’s officially an IDP—International Driving Permit. “IDL” is often used by fake websites selling useless, unrecognized documents.
You’ll see ads for “Instant Digital Driving License” or “IDL” that promise fast delivery and no paperwork. Don’t fall for it.
Real IDPs are paper booklets, issued by authorized organizations. If someone skips the license verification step or says digital-only is fine—it’s a red flag.
Some travelers have been turned away by police or car rentals because they showed a fake “IDL.”
If your IDP goes missing, stop driving. You won’t be legally allowed to drive without it—and replacements can’t be issued abroad.
Here’s what to do:
File a police report in Bangladesh. You’ll need it if anything happens or for your insurer.
Contact your issuing agency back home. They might give you advice—but won’t mail a new one internationally.
Speak to your embassy or consulate in Bangladesh. They can help with other documents, but not the IDP.

This isn’t a quick process. You’ll start with a learner’s permit, wait out a learning period, then pass written and practical driving tests—all handled by the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA).

What Happens to Your Insurance If You Don’t Have an IDP?
If you drive in Bangladesh without an IDP when it’s required, your car insurance—whether rental or third-party—can be denied. That means full personal liability.
