Vietnam’s New Mega Airport to Handle 100 Million Passengers Annually

Vietnam is gearing up for a major aviation upgrade. The country is building Long Thanh International Airport, a massive hub designed to accommodate more than 100 million passengers per year. Once completed, it will be one of the world’s largest airports, easing congestion in the rapidly growing travel market.

Located in Dong Nai Province, about 40 kilometers east of Ho Chi Minh City, the airport will replace Tan Son Nhat International as the region’s primary gateway. The current airport was built to handle around 30 million passengers annually, but with a 26% rise in international arrivals, demand has outgrown capacity.

The new airport will span 25,000 acres and feature four terminals shaped like a lotus flower, a symbol of Vietnam. Construction began on January 5, 2021, following initial approval in 2011 by former Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung. According to reports, the project is expected to be fully operational by 2035.
