Most Important Driving Rules

Driving in Ireland is a road trip adventure you don't want to miss, for it has the best scenic views in the world. You will see the gorgeous ocean, quiet roads, breathtaking landscapes of green. Still, before you get and hit the roads, you should know the Emerald Isle’s route, road safety, and traffic rules.

Which Side Of The Road Do They Drive On In Ireland?

Driving on the left side of the road is the norm. The driver's seat of the car is on the right-hand drive. It is a different driving rule from the other countries like the US that tourists get easily confused once they drive on the road's left side. If you're into cycling, the side of the road you need to follow is the same as the traffic flow, which is left, and when walking, you need to take the right side of the road.

Seatbelt Laws

The driver and all of the passengers should wear a seatbelt. If you're traveling with a child that's shorter than 4'11 (150 cm) and weighs under 36 pounds, you need to have a baby booster seat.

Traffic Road Signs

The direction signs differs from what road or routes you are currently driving. If you'll notice the sign is in blue, it is intended for the motorways. If it's in green, then it is for the national roads, and lastly, the white used for the local roads.

Traffic road signs also vary from what part of Ireland you're in. In the Republic of Ireland, signs are in Irish and English languages. The distances are in kilometers. In Northern Ireland, the language used in their signs is in English only and used miles in length.

Right of Way

The right of way is when you're at the unmarked crossings, the car coming from the right will have the right of way. The same goes for the vehicles that are already in a roundabout.

Yellow signs with the black patterns in the Republic gave the directions. They marked the crossings with its graphic approximation of the layout with thick lines representing the right way. The roads that need to yield have thinner lines on it.

It is best to let larger vehicles have tomorrow’s roads and rural roads for safety purposes. Still, you can also have the right of way if these big vehicles stop and yield to let you pass.

Legal Driving Age in Ireland

You need to be at least 17 years old and passed the driving theory test. In renting a car, the minimum age required is 21 years old. Other companies accept age under 25 and over 70 years old but will be charged for an extra fee. Some Irish destinations allow 75 years old as the maximum age to drive on their expanse.

Overtaking

Yes, based on the Road Traffic General Bye-laws of 1964, a driver shall not overtake or attempt to overtake. It would help if you overtook the right side and not move towards the left side until it is clear and safe to surpass. You can only overtake unless the roadway portion is free from traffic, away from the pedestrian, and any obstacles can cause an accident if overlooked.

Follow the rules while you’re enjoying the driving adventure from the Republic of Ireland to Northern Ireland. These rules will keep you and Irish citizens safe from accidents.
